About the Event
In Latin, today's service is referred to as a Tenebrae service. The word Tenebrae means "darkness." In this service, as each Scripture is read, a candle is extinguished from each candelabra. The increasing darkness symbolizes the flight and denial of the disciples and friends of Jesus. The moment of darkness recalls the death of Christ. In this darkness there is but one light--the eternal light of Christ. Even though darkness settles upon the earth, the light of God reminds us of the never failing presence of God's forgiveness and grace.
